The Love Guru
Where oh where do I start. My wife will attest to the fact that I’m seldom lost for words, but today Mike Myers has most definitely won the “What the???” award. The Love Guru is a tale of Guru Pitkar (Mike Myers) being employed by the Toronto Maple Leafs (An NHL hockey team for those not in the know) to help bring their star player into form and in turn, end their significant loosing streak.
If you are a Mike Myers fan you will probably be able to look past the significant amount innuendo and catch glimpses of classic Myers, but as a result definitely not a film for the kids. You can’t help but feel like the project was birthed by Mike Myers getting bored and deciding to make a film with some buddies, not at all concerned with phrases like “commercial viability” (oh I might mention some very famous buddies, loved the moustache Justin) With that comes numerous laugh out loud moments probably at the cost of some moral dignity.
The film serves as shrine to a number of Myers previous cult classics, and if you are a child of the nineties, you will probably revel in the challenge of picking up on all the references to his other films. Riddled with one liners there is every chance The Love Guru will take its place along side the likes of So I married an Axe Murderer at the local DVD store, not as box office hits, but cult classics.
