Whereas season 12 hit the road with the squeal of tires and the smell of burning rubber, season 13 was more like a gentile bicycle ride down a flat country lane. The season seemed to have been toned down, there were no really audacious stunts, no manic adventures, it was, to put it bluntly, sedate.
Now don’t get me wrong, the word sedate when used to describe TopGear is not the same sedate as you would use to describe a 38 part BBC period drama. The boys are still their, getting up to their antics and there are plenty of laughs to be had.
It’s just that when you think back to season 12, 13 seems to be a kind of unlucky number. The season that didn’t quite live up to expectations.
Maybe it’s just because 12 was so damned good. But as if to bang half a dozen nails into a coffin, the last segment on the last episode seemed more like a series ending episode rather than a season ending one.
Season 13 had the cars, some excellent guests and a healthy dose of humour and will keep the fans happy. It’s just a little less than you may have been expecting.
Roll on season 14 I say!
