Fool’s Gold is a light and fluffy action rom-com starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson as a husband and wife treasure hunting team. Or rather as an ex-team, as Tess (Kate Hudson) has just divorced Benjamin (Matthew McConaughey) and wants nothing more to do with searching for elusive sunken treasure ships – that is until Benjamin uncovers rock solid proof that their dream find exists.
Of course in true Hollywood script writing, Benjamin is also in debt to the local gangster who wants nothing more than to kill him and find the gold himself.
Enter stage left and right Ray Winstone and Donald Sutherland and things start to look up. Though sadly not by much. Fool’s Gold has plenty to put a smile on your face, but the laugh out loud moments are a little too far apart. On the one hand there’s a slapstick component to the comedy, but the movie isn’t played out in true slapstick fashion, so it tends to be either forced of slightly out of place, and on the other hand the romance quota is a little on the clichéd and predictable side.
All in all it’s probably an ok way to spend an evening with your significant other, and there are some great characters played by Winstone and Sutherland. The summery feel to the whole affair also helps ease back the winter depression just a little.
Food for thought:
If your spend you whole life looking for that elusive prize, you might just miss out on what is right in front of you.
