Did You Hear About The Morgans?
Lets be brutally honest, Hugh Grant isn’t a good actor. You know exactly what you’re going to get; Hugh Grant playing Hugh Grant in different locations. Not that that’s always a bad thing. Then you’ve got Sarah Jessica Parker who really isn’t much above the levels of Grant. Throw in Sam Elliott and Mary Steenburgen who despite not getting paid nearly as much as Grant and Parker, manage to steal the show, even if their on screen marriage is firmly rooted in predictabilityland. Cheesey predictable American mumbo-jumble.
Ah, the story line you ask – Two successful New Yorkers (everyone in real life lives in New York and is successful) Paul and Meryl have moved away from each other and about to finalise things with a divorce, when they decide to have one last dinner together. On the way home, they witness the murder of an international arms dealer and have to be put into protective custardy together, in the rural bareness of Wyoming. Cue predictable plot and cheesy humour with saccharine sweet wrap up at the end.
So it’s sounding pretty bad a this point right? Well it’s not (well, yes it is, sort of). You see, whilst we may not rave about or even remember Did You Hear About The Morgans?, it does do what it sets out to do – it entertains in one of the most relaxed ways any film can, but not taxing your brain, or having you freaking out sitting on the edge of your seat. It’s a gentle romcom that is suitable for the whole family, or the perfect film to watch with your girlfriend/parnter/wife if you want to earn brownie points. It’s in this style of film that the Grant/Parker team up works so dazzlingly well.
