Zack And Miri Make A Porno
Just in case the title didn’t give you enough of a warning, here’s a little extra warning; Zack and Miri contains more than enough raunch, nudity, and expletives to justify it’s R18 rating. Having said that it does contain enough laughs to justify it’s place in the comedy genre, and funnily enough, a major romantic story line that it could almost be called a rom-com.
It’s major problem however is that it’s trying to have its feet on both sides of the fence. There’s just a little too much porn for the average punter, but probably nowhere near enough for the average pron addict.
Had Kevin Smith scaled back the visual overload and gone for more implied or creative camera work – as he did with the lead stars scenes – then the comedy and romance would have more room to shine. As would Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks’ roles. Two adorable characters that seemed to be playing the rom-com part pitch perfect. You knew from early on what was going to happen, as is par for the course with any good rom-com, but your were never quite ready for some of the more explicit scenes.
I will say that Zack and Miri certainly had me laughing, but I’m not sure it was enough fun to cover over the excesses.

The major theme of Zack and Miri is one of consequences. All through the film we see the consequences of bad decisions; not paying bills sees the water and power cut off. Not talking about their true emotions almost sees them loosing each other. In a world where we want everything now, we leave little time (if any) to contemplate the consequences of our actions. If we just slowed down and thought through things a bit more, we might not be in as big a mess as we currently are.
