There have been rumours around for a while about the possibility of Bioshock being made into a film, with names like Guillermo Del Toro even showing interest in directing such a project. Now it looks like Universal and Take-Two have have got things moving with the announcement of a director. The lucky man is Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, The Ring and The Weather Man), with the screenplay by John Logan (Gladiator, Star Trek: Nemesis, The Last Samurai).
Verbinski had this to say: “I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that’s cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential… Of all the games I’ve played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative.”
Of course, you can’t escape that familiar sinking feeling that goes along with any video game adaptation: will it be any good. Has there actually ever been a good movie come out of a video game?
