E.R. – The Complete 13th Season
Season 12 delivered a massive cliff-hanger, one so big that it took the first two blistering episodes of season 13 to resolve most of the loose ends. The season literally hit the ground running and I think I watched the entire first disc in on sitting, such was the hold the action had on me.
Of course, it was an impossible pace to give up, and the season settled down into it’s usual routine of bizarre cases, human drama and relationships. Roles changed, people came and left, but the ER kept on going.
From one episode to the next, the passion and commitment, conflicts and politics at County General enthralled me as they have for the previous 12 seasons, weaving it’s magic and proving that it still has the strength to keep going.
Managing to stay with the same basic formula whilst keeping the show fresh and engaging is no small feat, the writers, actors and everyone involved work well together to bring to life the mundane to the outlandish facets of life, with just the right mix of production and humanity to allow the viewer to immerse themselves into the day to day dramas.
The season was almost flawless, right up to the last disc, where an entire episode was set outside the ER, away from medical dramas and the show seemed to loose focus, seemingly happy to rely on political messages to bring the season to a pathetic end. But just before the curtains fell on the thirteenth season, the writers slam you in the guts with a punch you never saw coming, and once again you have to wait impatiently for the next season to arrive.
