Blindsight is a documentary following six blind Tibetan teenagers in their pursuit to climb the Lhakpa Ri peak on Mount Everest. Accompanied by well known blind mountaineer American Eric Weihenmayer and sighted guides the teenagers embark on a journey that would strengthen and challenge all involved.
This documentary not only journeys through the difficulties of blind mountaineering but also follows the teenagers in their day to day life. In Tibet blind people are often shunned and are thought to be possessed by demons. In following the teenagers into their homes you can see the affect of this on them and their families. The teenagers go to a school for the blind, Braille Without Borders, co-founded by a German women Sabriye Tenberken who herself is also blind. The documentary interweaves successfully the story of the school and Sabriye with the lives of the six teenagers, Eric Weihenmayer’s amazing endeavors and the frustrations and challenges presented to the group as they try to conquer a mountain. The result of this is both inspiring and beautiful it shows the importance of community, of the importance of the strong helping the weak and something of what heaven on earth can look like.
