DVD Review: These Final Hours
These Final Hours is an Australian apocalyptic film, set in Perth of all places. The end is coming, and it’s not some abstract term. An asteroid has impacted earth in the northern hemisphere and created a wall of fire that is slowly engulfing the entire planet. Perth has 12 hours left to live. These Final Hours follows the final half a day in James’ life, as he goes from having sex with his occasional girl friend, to abandoning her to be with his long time girlfriend, who is hosting the party to end the world with.
On the way however, he has to negotiate a city that has turned to chaos as people take different approaches to only having 12 hours left to live. In a world where their is no long term consequences, or hope, people do all manner of things. As James makes his way through suburbia, he see’s two men drag a young girl screaming from their panel van into a house. He eyes up the van as a new mode of transport to his hedonistic party, but the girls screams get the better of him.
He manages to rescue the girl, but then is faced with a dilemma – what does he do with the girl. He can’t just leave her to fend for herself, but he has a party to go to.
It’s not an easy question for James to answer and becomes the beginning of a very complex road trip, on a day that should have been a simple end of the world affair.
These Final Hours is an interesting look at how different people approach their own mortality, and the strength of character that some of us possess. Whilst not as memorable as Australian post apocalyptic drama The Rover, These Final Hours makes for an intense and enjoyable “what if” film.
