I’ll be honest and admit that I only got Underworld Awakening to see Kate Beckinsale in skin-tight leather get all nasty with some werewolves. I haven’t followed the series, but everyone seems to appreciate Kate’s role so I figured I’d give it a go.
The plot goes a little like this; humans have discovered that Vampires and Lycans (werewolves) exist, and have begun an all out eradication of both species. Death Dealer Selene (Beckinsale) is captured whilst trying to save her hybrid love interest and awakens many years in the future, having to escape a research facility to discover that both Vampires and Lycans exist, but they’ve had to go to ground, and the peace agreement that was presumably signed at the end of the last film, is now in tatters.
There’s a few twists and a big boss battle, but it’s mostly just Kate and skin tight leather, doing matrix style action set pieces along with some sub par CGI and a plot so flimsy its barely holding together.
I’m don’t know what – other than Kate – keep people coming back for more of this, it’s unlikely that the previous films were that much better, but I’d suggest that if you’ve enjoyed the franchise o far, you’ll enjoy this installment. If you haven’t seen any of the Underworld films before, it might be helpful to start at the beginning. Or not.
