In this almost Biblical supernatural thriller, Hilary Swank plays the role of Katherine Winter, an ex-missionary who’s turned her back on God after seeing her husband and six year old daughter martyred in the Sudan.
Such is the ferocity of her abrupt departure from God, that she now dedicates her life to debunking miracles around the globe, in a seeming effort to convince herself that God doesn’t exist.
Which makes her team mate an interesting choice. Essentially a token black character, and the only Christian presence in this movie, one has to wonder why Katherine Winter would choose a dedicated church going Christian as her right hand man.
Maybe it gives her a little balance when debunking miracles, who knows.
Such is her reputation that when the small Southern town of Haven experiences the first of the Old Testament plagues – a river turned to blood – they turn to Katherine’s expertise to explain what’s happening.
All too happy to oblige, and because it’s what she’s apparently paid big bucks to do, Katherine and black Christian token man head South to the little known, not on the map, town of Haven, where things are of course not what they seem.
As a heart pounding thriller, The Reaping certainly keeps you at the edge of your seat. The only problem is, that everything is made up of typical horror clichés.
Most of the scary moments are due to Katherine doing your typical stupid heroine, explore by my self in the dark type things. Sure it gives a cheap thrill, but I think this movie was capable of much more than a by the numbers supernatural horror.
From a spiritual perspective it does get interesting in the final scenes, but then the cheese is poured on big time and this kind of ruins the whole turning back to the faith to overcome the evil forces concept.
Cheap thrills that work, but leave a sour taste in your mouth.
Food for thought
“It’s easy to lose faith… people need to believe in miracles.” – Ben (token black man).
