The Best and Worst of 2010
Its traditional at this time of the year to review the past 12 months and find a way to shoe horn every movie into a top ten list. Well.. We dont like that idea. The problem is that this year brought us a number of really good movies, and while Urbankiwi and FamousFiveNZ both enjoy different types of movies, we thought it only fair to build a list of categories and find out their bests.
Most Painful Movie of 2010
Urbankiwi : This is a tie for me between Mel Gibsons Yawn Fest “Edge of Darkness” and Russel Crowes “Robin Hood” – Good actors but what was the point.
FamousFive : Edge of Darkness – proved that Mel isn’t a good actor, it’s just that he’d had some really good scripts.
Most Awkward Movie of 2010
Urbankiwi : Four Lions – A hilarious movie that genuinely made me roll on the floor laughing, yet at the end it was about terrorism and i just felt so bad about laughing.
FamousFive : Men who Stare at Goats – A really weird film based on a true story about a guy who spends the last scene of the film tripping out on LSD.
Strangest / WTF Movie of 2010
Urbankiwi : Men who Stare at Goats – What… the heck was that? Still quite funny but who was smoking weed when they wrote that.
FamousFive : Shutter Island – Over dramatic music overcompensates for a lack of plot and misdirection on what could have been a really taught thriller.
WOW Factor Movie of 2010
Urbankiwi : Inception – great new storyline, great acting, great visuals. WOW.
Famousfive : Book of Eli – Who would have guessed that the post apocalyptic world could be so enticing?
Best 3D Movie of 2010
Urbankiwi : Being the year of the 3D movie its been a mixed bag, and everyone has had a spin at doing 3D. Most have been a token gesture, but i think the best has to be Tron 3D. Using 3D elements when it was appropriate and using them very very well.
FamousFive : Legend of the Guardians – I have to say this up front: I hate 3D. It should be a fad that has already died from natural causes, but because Hollywood and the tech industry want to squeeze as much money out of us as possible, it’s here to stay. The one upside to 3D, and this is where Legends really shines, is in the 3D projection. The crisp graphics alone would have given this visually spectacular film enough depth without the nuisance of wearing glasses.
Best Blokes / Action Movie of 2010
Urbankiwi : Its a tie for me. “District 9” was an amazing film for the dollars spent, however the one that i enjoyed quite alot was “The Town”. Yeah I disliked Ben Affleck alot until this movie.
Famousfive : The Expendables – Bollocks to District 9. It was a good solid film, but not Action Movie of 2010. Nothing – and I mean nothing – kicked butt like Stallone’s return to 80’s action form. Period.
Best Overall Movie of 2010
Urbankiwi : The movie that I’ve picked for the year is one that is very hard to find, it was part of another stellar NZ Film Festival line up. “WasteLand” is a doco about the Brazilian Catadore’s in the worlds largest rubbish pile. Its moving and to this very day still haunts me. http://www.wastelandmovie.com/
FamousFive : Black Swan – Wasteland would have to be my pick for best Doco, but Black Swan is the film that managed to impress me the most this year.
Urbankiwi : Ironically I was questioned heavily as to my desire to see Black Swan, asked why I wanted to see a movie about Ballet. I have only one comment to add to this.. Justified!!! haha.
FamousFive : So how come you missed the screening….. hmmmmm
So whats your top movies for 2010 in these categories?
