Touted as the Sequel to a number of B rated movies from the 70’s and 80’s, Piranhas 3D brings some of the most cliche moments to water based horror you will ever find.
So the basic premise is an earthquake has hit Lake Victoria during the peak of spring break. While the towns folk are unaware, a huge underwater cave has opened up breaking out some prehistoric Piranhas. As the film powers on we are treated to a growing level of gore as the piranhas start discovering their new found freedom.
So whats the verdict? Urbankiwi and Asher went along expecting nothing more than Boobs and Gore… Here’s what they thought :
You get everything you expected from this movie, Piranhas, Boobs, Blood & Christopher Lloyd in eye popping 3D! And yep, you actually see eyes pop out.
Is it even worth looking into the story? Ok, it’s probably quicker just watching the trailer. There’s a lake, under that lake is another lake filled with prehistoric piranha, on top of the first lake are hundreds of teenagers celebrating spring break. Fun!
Christopher Lloyd was genius, even more genius than Richard Dreyfus’s short lived on screen cameo. And i will add its very satisfying seeing soooo many A list actors ending up buying the farm (and so quickly too).
This movie doesn’t aim to be anything more than a well produced B movie, and it achieves that. Its probably a little better than Snakes On A Plane, with one particular highlight being Christopher Lloyd, great to see him doing his crazy wide eyed stare again. Unfortunately in trying to be a B movie it slid a little too much in to the Blood & Boobs territory to safely be able to recommend it as a throwaway night out.
Did we mention Boobs? Cause there are a couple of moments when you swear your just watching porn. And lets be honest; we all laughed.. and i wonder if it was just an awkward laugh because you just knew it was all going to hit a bad end.
I spent most of the last 3rd wincing at pretty heavy gore, that looked like it could have come from a zombie war movie, obviously there are people out there that could handle it, but that holds the movie back from being as easily consumable (ha.) as it could have been.
There were moments i was hoping the director and the writers were not planning to go there… The problem is they did… And thats just the big problem with these films now, because of the hype and the style of film it was they have to go there.. and beyond there.. otherwise there would be no surprises.
Things you probably need to be to enjoy Piranha 3D:
3) With a bunch more people who are also 1 & 2
4) Able to handle a Piranha eating through a girls face
5) Able to handle a Piranha eating a Penis
6) non-offendable (is that a term?)
I guess most people who are seeing this know that they’re seeing a movie that only deserves a 4 out of 10 at most. So there’s not a heck of a lot of point explaining it, but there you go.
Yeah this movie doesn’t deserve high marks. Its not that clever and it pushed way too many boundaries for me. The 3D was a bit awkward to start with and really do we want bouncing booty in your face… in 3D? If you do, see this movie…
