Punisher: War Zone
I’m not entirely sure if Punisher: War Zone was trying to be a dark action film or an over the top comedy. What I do know is it fails miserably no matter what genre it was trying to appease.
I wasn’t even expecting that much, the first Punisher movie was an enjoyable popcorn action flick, but wouldn’t make it on to anyone’s best of lists. It was quite surprising that it even got a sequel. If I were going to be nice about War Zone, I would say it was what Speed 2 was to the original Speed; a cheap attempt to make a quick buck, which removes everything that might have been good about the original.
As an action film War Zone has very little adrenaline pumping action, lacks in any awe inspiring cinematography and despite it’s 98 minute runtime, feels like you’ve just wasted 8 hours of you life through watching it.
The biggest problem comes from replacing Thomas Jane with Ray Stevenson. Ray plays The Punisher as if he’s a cardboard cut-out of an incontinent geriatric. He has the charisma of a used piece of toilet paper and with directors ridiculous set pieces it’s a recipe for total film failure.
I’ve tried to come up with something redemptive about the film, but I’ve come up empty after thinking hard for a day.
This is one to avoid.
