One look at the DVD cover and I think ahhh yerr, here we go. Jackie Chan and look he seems angry he’s got busies and cuts on his face, I turn the DVD over he’s standing in front of an angry mob YES!. He’s holding a sword, unusual but I’ll take it! R16..
So all the ingredients are there for a Jackie great. I’m a big believer of judging a movie by its DVD cover, the picture they use the composition, even the font. They were all telling me, that I should ignore the shocking run of movies he’s had, this time its back to old school….
So off we go its based in Japan he’s a Chinese immigrant trying to find his girl that came across earlier. He’s his usual character, shy, hardworking and honest to a flaw. Hey doesn’t worry me, just bring on the first person to challenge his sense of justice! And sure enough, in classic Jackie style, he witnesses his friendly female boss getting mugged. Finally! Go do your thing Jackie. He gets rid of them but he gets beaten, he doesn’t use any martial arts… No that’s ok, I’ve seen this before. He’s made a promise to someone or to himself, that that’s not who his is anymore, yer that’s what it is.
The story progresses him and a bunch of his mates set up a small business for one of his closest buddies, everyone is happy. His closest buddy goes out on the town selling his wares, Yakuza boss chops his hand off, everyone is sad. This is it! Jakie’s characters always have these promise breaking thresholds, and chopping his bros hand off and then stomping it into the ground when he asks for it back, should do the trick. He gets the bash and runs off……………… Whats going on here!..
The story progresses, he wants revenge, sort of, he becomes a local boss-WHO cares! Just answer this, does he go and study or develop his own style of martial art? No. Does he use a ladder as a ninja like weapon? No. Does he fend off an entire Yakuza gang using kitchen utensils! No. Does he get chased down an alley only to find it’s a dead end, the Yakuza’s think they have him, Jakie then just runs straight up a wall over a barbed fence and though a tiny window in one smooth set of movements to safety?? …No. Is… There any use …Of Martial arts, in this movie?….Not by Jackie-Well what’s the point!.. Well he’s trying to move away from that and focus on his acting….. WHATEVER.
