DVD Review: Everly
The trailer for Everly looked like it could be quite a fun film, though it also looked like it could be a really bad, B grade film, with all the best bits in the trailer. Sadly, the later was true.
The film, which comes with a well earned R18 sticker, begins with a brutal off-screen rape of the films heroine, Everly. Then Everly stumbles into view, entering the bathroom the viewer was hiding in, throwing some clothes on and recovering a gun she had hidden. She then proceeds to kill every single one of her torturers.
Where she acquired the gun skills to do this is anyone’s guess, as the film plainly states, she is nothing but a washed up whore. Everly (the film) flicks between a woman as a strong and capable adversary and women as nothing more than whores obeying their male masters. It’s a mixed message that does nothing for the storyline.
But fear not, because the storyline will dive as low as it can, with some truly bizarre and necessary scenes, that rip any sense of comedic promise from this over the top film, cementing it in the dark regions of brutality for entertainment, where it is left to die.
