DVD Review: The Captive
The Captive is an interesting story about the abduction of a 9 year old girl, Cassandra, from the back of her dads truck whilst he went into a cafe to buy a pie for dinner. It focuses on several aspects of the lives connected to the kidnapping. The strain placed on the parents and their relationship, the role of the police and that of the kidnappers and the ring of pedophiles they supply, and last but not least, Cassandra herself.
To undertake these different story-lines, and presumably to try and add some tension, the viewer is forced to come to grips with at least three overlapping timelines, which for the mots part confuse rather than add to the story being told.
Add to this the paper thin acting and some pretty big plot holes and you’re left with a great concept that had amazing potential, but was fumbled and dropped way before the cameras even started rolling.
