DVD Review: The Judge
Robert Downey Jr. plays off against Robert Duvall in this riveting and emotional drama. Downey plays a cocky big-city lawyer called Hank Palmer with a heavy dose of flippant witticism. Duvall is his polar opposite as his father, Joseph Palmer, a small-town judge who’s old fashioned, firm, but fair. And lacking in any sunny disposition.
It’s Downey and Duvall who make the film, with out them this cliched story of a prodigal son returning home only to find that his dad has terminal cancer would be in danger of being a dull, too long melodrama.
But Downey and Duvall’s chemistry pull this film out of the mire and it becomes an emotional roller-coaster that occasionally trips over itself, but is ultimately full of heart, if a little on the sad side as well. Well worth an evening to sit down and watch.
