DVD Review: Homefront
Sylvester Stallone sure turns up in some unexpected places these days. One of those places is the writing credits for Jason Statham’s latest DVD release, Homefront. It should be no surprise that these two have teamed up, after seeing them buddy up in the Expendables films. Still, weird seeing the man who could never deliver legible lines in his own films in the 80’s, writing films in 2014.
It’s a pretty basic film, based on the novel of the same name by Chuck Logan. Undercover DEA agent helps bring down drug cartel, but in the process is revealed as an undercover cop, and gets the drug lord’s son killed. Bad movem death threats ensue.
Jump forward 2 years and now ex-DEA agent Phil Broker (Statham) has moved to some back water town to escape his past, and the recent death of his wife and mother of his 9 year old daughter. Of course, Broker upsets the wrong person, who in turn enlists her meth lab brother to help make amends, who in turn stumbles upon Broker’s real identity, and things start to get real interesting, real quick.
Sure it sounds like a play by the number action flick, and essentially it is. But for a few things. For one, it stars The Stath. Case closed, the film rocks.
But wait, there’s more.
Kate Bosworth nails her role as a white trash mother with an attitude the size of Kim Dot Com. It’s scary to see her on screen as you could be forgiven for thinking you’re watching an episode of Police 10-7 as this chick is for real. Then you have James Franco going to town on a 17 year old guy with a baseball bat. Holy heck, this just when through the roof.
Then you have another surprise, with Winona Ryder sinking to a new low, with a believable role as a crack whore. Yes, I called her a crack whore.
Statham’s got all the right moves and all the right lines, the action is well paced, and the story keeps things moving along for a great night in-front of the box. Never again will I doubt the genius of Stallone.
