Max Allan Collins to Direct Two Road to Perdition Sequels
Although Sam Mendes is still best known for directing the Oscar-winning American Beauty, I think his two follow-up films, Road to Perdition and Jarhead, were quite impressive in their own right. Road to Perdition in particular is a very underrated movie, with a performance from Tom Hanks that doesn’t get mentioned often enough. Considering the fact that it was based on a graphic novel, I’m surprised the movie doesn’t get more love in general.
Well this week we have some exciting news for fans of this movie. Apparently there are two sequels in the works from the writer of the original graphic novel, Max Allan Collins. They are titled Road to Purgatory and Road to Paradise respectively, and will focus on Michael Sullivan, Jr., the son of Tom Hanks’ character in the first movie. Mendes will not be directing either of them, but instead, Collins himself will be stepping into the driver’s seat. Apparently Frank Miller has opened the door for comic book writers to step in and direct their own feature film adaptations. I’m not so sure this is a great thing, although in the case of Max Allan Collins, he has previously directed a few low budget horror films and a direct-to-video adaptation of the play Eliot Ness: An Untouchable Life. But is that really enough experience behind the camera? [/film]
