Runner Runner is essentially a short story padded out to the size of a novel, that attempts to take the viewer behind the scenes of the off shore internet gambling websites. Featuring Justin Timberlake as Princeton college student Richie, who is paying his way through college by getting kick backs from referring people to gambling sites. Of course the kickbacks just aren’t cutting it so he becomes a victim of the very site he promotes loosing 17k in one night.
Not one to stay down for the count, Richie figures out that he was played and decides to fly down to Costa Rica and let the website owner, Ivan Block (Ben Affleck) know that someone has hacked his website. Ivan of course is so grateful that he offers Richie a high paying job in his casino company.
But things, rather predictably, are not as they seem.
What the heck Timberlake is doing playing second fiddle to Ben Affleck is anybodies guess, but Runner Runner takes no risks and fails to pay off in any way. It’s not that there is anything wrong with the film, it’s just that it’s bland, run of the mill and not something you’d recommend to anyone.
Rating: M Violence, offensive language and sex scenes.
